Where I'm from

I’m from the only part of the North that was south of what’s south of US

where business names were Italian; street names, French

where two worlds,  in a staring contest across The Narrows,
blinked once a year in a Freedom Festival

where a Lancaster on a concrete plinth, in a sunken garden
returned like a Bad Penny from raining manna on Holland

where crust was thin cornmeal,  pepperoni was shredded, mushrooms were canned

where Fords', and Chryslers' and GM (no ‘s’)
were already sanded translucent by Thatcherism/Reaganomics/Mulroney Toryism
where the unions slowly wasted from neoliberal mesothelioma

where, for little while longer, D-list university students rubbed shoulders
with lifers on assembly lines in the summer

where 12 strip clubs and 60 massage parlors beckoned: “come sin in our city”

where the funk of roasting malt flavoured the air
in a whisky baron’s model neighbourhood

where being this far south, but somehow still North
where the Great Society guttered, choked, drowned
where I could know its streets, its landscape, its resonant frequency
where I still feel like I came from nowhere.

How to be a girl dad

Sunlight peeking through a play structure

Be at the bottom of every slide
Give her choices and consequences
Dad joke at every possible opportunity
Watch horror movies with her that she’s too young to watch
Lose gracefully: she’s more cleverer than you;
Deliberately mishear the lyrics to the songs she likes
Use Tiktok slang around her friends
Take Italian lessons with her to connect her to her heritage
Don’t wait too long to recognize her neuro has diverged
Don’t spill a drop of that guilt on her
Make sure you heart the text she sent at 4:30am as soon as you wake up

Reassure her then re-reassure her:
Yes, she will do well in uni
Yes, she will get a good job
Yes, she will find her tribe
Yes, she will find love,
Yes, she will be happy

Remind her, often, that you’re always right. She’ll find that reassuring.

Be her reason to stay among all the reasons to go

Be at the bottom of every slide especially as the slides get longer

The shape of the echoes in my mind?
